SP 6 PRO makes Chrome work too hard

Postby srozenbe » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:23 am

Hi there.

After installing plugin into my Chrome, I see that one of worker threads is constantly consuming from 5 up to 15% of CPU. Checking in Chrome's built-in Task manager I see that this load is brought by SP's plugin and autofill engine extension. This is pure CPU load with neither UI (rendered frames) nor network activities.

I'm wondering what kind of calculation tasks can this plugin do ;) and how can I get rid of it?

My Chrome version is 24.0.1312.57 m

Thanks.

Hi,

Could you please send me your System info file? It can be found by

1) Right-clicking on the Sticky Password icon in the System tray icon
2) Select Help
3) Click on "System info..."

A window will appear with the pertinent Sticky Password technical information that will be used to analyze your issue. NO passwords are included in this information! We do NOT know or collect any password information.

4) Click the Copy button and paste it in a response to this post.

Im thinking... if you changed encryption algorinm to something more secure (1000bits) cant this be the problem? That pc encrypting database so this load?

Sorry, was it a question to me or support team? I did not change any encryption-related settings, just used the same that was set by default during installation.
Besides, why does it need to constantly encrypt something? I do not operate my passwords database very often.
May it be the influence of Symantec Antivirus software I have working? Might be I shall try to add passwords database as exception for file monitor, in case attempt to check this file triggers some re-calculations?

It has nothing to do with encryption.
Basically, the extension is responsible for "analyzing" the loaded page, finding forms to be filled, filling the data, etc. The plugin is responsible for communication between the extension and the database.

What specs is your PC, srozenbe? Is it perhaps a netbook or something like that? I can't imagine other reason for having such high CPU load from these processes.

It is not a netbook. It is DELL Latitude E6410.
And I hardly believe it is related to pages analysis (unless it tries to analyse everything ever been cached). CPU load did not lower even if I close all pages except the only home-made page, stored on my PC and having no external links.

Well, I stated the facts and you can surely believe in whatever you want ;-).
All I can say that my Chrome running in a VirtualBox machine(!) on a DELL 6520 with i5@2,5GHz shows numbers from 0 to 5 for the Sticky Password extension and plugin in its task manager.

It means that your Chrome behaves the same way as mine, right? So there are already two of us who have SP making Chrome's life busy :-)

No, it doesn't. You said it shows 5 to 15% CPU load, which is much more than mine.
And I definitely do NOT call my 0% CPU (with 5% in peaks, i.e. very rarely) "busy"...

Well, My Chrome's Task manager also shows only 1 to 3 (I did not even see 5), while Process Explorer which I use instead of Windows Task Manager does show 5 - 15. I guess these two guys just use different methods of measurements, but I really trust Process Explorer since I use it for years and it never failed me.

Check the Process Explorer again and look at the details of the individual chrome.exe sub-processes (in the process' tooltip). Identify the sub-process which actually runs the Sticky Password plugin and then check the CPU load of this sub-process - it's more or less the same as the number in the Chrome internal task manager.
Make sure that you don't confuse the plugin sub-process with e.g. renderer sub-process which usually creates much higher CPU load...
And BTW, Process Explorer won't show you the Sticky Password Chrome extension separately...

Ok, let me state it this way:

1. Process Explorer shows me two out of 10+ Chrome processes consume CPU. Yes, it does not show that these are SP threads.

2. Chrome's task manager also show me two processes consume CPU. numbers are different, but these two processes are "Extension: Sticky Password Autofill Engine" and "Plug-in: Sticky Password"

If you sure (or want me to believe) that Sticky Password is not in business here, just forget it. I see that there is no easy solution for this, but I'm at least hope that somebody would take a look on possible improvement.

Thanks.

I am not a technician, I should not try to analyze the running processes. I have never looked into the internal Chrome task manager before. My result was like this:
Internal_TM_Chrome.jpg
Internal_TM_Chrome.jpg (49.58 KiB) Viewed 3714 times

Based on the PIDs from Chrome TM, I found identical CPU usage displayed in Win7's Performance Monitor.

I was a bit worried about the constantly increasing memory usage, but after a while it dropped down and started a new increasing usage.

Evzen wrote:Basically, the extension is responsible for "analyzing" the loaded page, finding forms to be filled, filling the data, etc. The plugin is responsible for communication between the extension and the database.

I have no personal knowledge of why Sticky is working so “hard” in this case. Maybe ondrej.novak can enlighten us?

My image shows that I have another toolbar/plugin, namely Norton Identity Safe, which also stores some URLs and passwords. There is no change in the CPU load from this vault. (Norton does not have a virtual keyboard, to compare SP with NIS is like comparing apples with oranges.)

I recalled srozenbe's topic to talk about “hard to use Chrome with SP installed”, but the underlying reason for the topic was a bit different: “SP 6 PRO makes Chrome work too hard”. So, srozenbe, you are worried for the load on Chrome, not for your work with Chrome? Anyway an interesting observation!

Guys, please...
The extension uses JavaScript ==> what we probably see in the Chrome task manager is status of the JS engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript_engine) running the extension. The JS engines do its own memory management ==> the increasing and decreasing memory/CPU usage is probably a result of this memory management... not a result of the extension's activity itself.
Maybe yes, maybe not...

Is anyone involved in this discussion so knowledgable that he can say for sure that the CPU load and memory activity is really caused by the extension and not by the JS engine? Does anyone here have so deep knowledge of the Chrome internals that he can say that?
I don't... do you?

Things are usually much more complicated than they may seem to the common people, so let's not waste any more time with these pointless - i.e. based on (most probably incorrect) assumptions instead of facts, incomplete information, insufficient knowledge, etc. - discussions and amazing discoveries.

I doubt that the discussed CPU load is making any REAL problems with using the computer...

Another datapoint, FWIW...

In Chrome Task Manager, Sticky's entries for Extension and Plugin run between 2-5% CPU even when the browser is idle. All other Task Manager entries are ZERO CPU, so there is indeed something odd in Sticky's behavior. :o

Even when Chrome has an empty blank page loaded, Sticky is still churning the CPU. While this might seem to some a modest usage, it seems wrong without an explanation.

Would you leave a leaky water faucet unattended if 2.5 percent of your monthly water usage was going down the drain for no purpose :?:

I too, am curious like to know the real cause :ugeek:
