Evil Shadow Team hackers breach Microsoft's Indian website
Microsoft's Indian web store was recently the victim of an online security breach. Hackers from the Chinese group known as the Evil Shadow Team stole usernames and passwords of customers who made purchases through the site.
In a statement emailed to Reuters, a Microsoft spokeswoman said the company is currently investigating the incident, which forced the shutdown of the Indian website.
"The store customers have already been sent guidance on the issue and suggested immediate actions," she told the news source. "We are diligently working to remedy the issue and keep our customers protected."
One of the Evil Shadow Team hackers - known as 7z1 - told Reuters that information obtained during the breach was unencrypted. The news source indicated that the individual, who posted screen shots of the attack, said he is a "patriotic hacker."
To ensure sensitive information is harder to obtain, customers and businesses operating online can use password manager software to protect their interests with phrasing that is updated constantly. The solution also allows people to take their encrypted database with them on the go if they travel frequently.
