Online security breaches can take many forms, and the popularity of video games appears to be the perfect platform for cybercriminals seeking ways to exploit unsuspecting users.

One of the most popular online gaming communities resides within the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Alex Garden, manager for the service, recently issued a statement regarding the issues of security breaches and the steps Microsoft is taking to thwart an onslaught of cyberattacks.

"Security is an ongoing battle," Garden said in his statement. "No matter how well we work to improve security - and we are working every day to bring new forms of protection to Xbox LIVE - our work will never end. With every measure we put in place, ill-intentioned people will create new ways to attack online services."

Gamers seeking ways to ensure their financial information is protected should bolster their passwords. According to PCWorld's Nick Mediati, passwords are not only the first line of defense against online security attacks, but consumers can also control the phrasing themselves. The writer suggested making purchases manually when possible so credit card information is not targeted during a breach.
