Recently, I showed you how to be safe on Facebook. Today, I’ll introduce you to two more extra security features – Login Notifications and Login Approvals.

1. Login Notifications

Login Notifications are a very useful extra security feature in Facebook. When you turn on Login Notifications, Facebook will send you an alert each time someone logs into your account from a new location.

Setting up Login Notifications

Go to the Facebook Settings menu, and click Security.

FB-Safely2-1Click Edit in the Login Notifications line.

Select how you would like to be notified: Email, Text message/Push notification, or both.

If you select Text message/Push notification, you’ll be prompted to enter your mobile/cell phone number. Enter your phone number and click Continue.

You’ll receive a text on your mobile phone with the confirmation code. Enter the Confirmation Code in the field and click Confirm.

2. Login Approvals

Login approvals are another extra security feature offered by Facebook that uses your phone to protect your account. Basically, this is a form of 2-factor authentication (2FA) when logging in to Facebook from ‘unknown’ browsers.

When you turn on Login approvals, you’ll be asked to enter a special security code each time you try to access your Facebook account from a new computer or mobile phone. After you log in, you’ll have the option to give that device a name and save it to your account.

Turning on Login approvals

Go to the Facebook Settings menu, and click Security.

Check the checkbox Require a security code to access my account from unknown browsers. Click Save Changes.

Click Get Started.

Select the type of phone you use. Make sure you have the latest version of the Facebook app on your device, and click Continue.

FB-Safely2-10Now it’s necessary to activate the Code Generator on your mobile device. Follow the directions in the popup, and then click Continue.

To test the Code Generator, enter the security code from your Facebook mobile app – Menu – Code generator and click Confirm.

If you’re not able to use the Code Generator for some reason, Facebook can text the security code to your phone. Click Continue.

For security reasons, you’ll be prompted to re-enter your Facebook password. Click Submit.

Enter your phone number and click Continue.

You’ll receive a text on your mobile number. Enter the Confirmation Code into the field and click Confirm.

Setup for Login Approvals is complete. If you want to take advantage of Login Approvals right away, check the checkbox and click Close.

Where you can find the code generator? Tap the menu button and scroll down to find the Code Generator. A new Security code will appear every 30 seconds.
